GETTING STARTED ACTIVITIES AND PREPARING FOR SKYPE
FAQ BOARD I have set up an FAQ Forum in the DISCUSSIONS link on Blackboard. At any time that you have a question, post your question to this area. If I don't see the answer right off hand, someone else in the class may know the answer. I encourage you to help each other. In order to facilitate this forum, I want you to subscribe to the forum. When you do this, you will receive an e-mail indicating that there is a new posting on the FAQ Forum. Here's how to subscribe to any of the threads on the discussion board:
Go to the DISCUSSION BOARD link and click on the FAQ FORUM.
There will be two buttons on the top left
Create Thread
Subscribe
After you have subscribed, the SUBSCRIBE button will turn to UNSUBSCRIBE. That is how you will know that you have subscribed.
POSTYOUR PERSONAL BIOGRAPHY AND COMMENT (If you have created a Personal Biography and an About.Me projects for me in a previous class, you may re-post the links on the DISCUSSION BOARD. I would encourage you to update any information if there are significant changes - particularly in your professional About.me site.) I would like to get to know each of you a little better. During the first week, I want you to give me (and the rest of the class) a brief biography of you. It can be personal or professional but I would like it to be a document with both pictures and narration. I suggest a minimum of six pictures with an audio narration but you can make the introduction as long as you wish. (“Getting to know you, Getting to know all about you…” -- Who knows where that line is from? I'd give you bonus points but you aren't getting any points for this anyway!). You can use any source for this project. Here are some suggestions:
The biography will be due by 11:59 22 August, Friday. Be sure to comment on each other’s biography on Blackboard.
CREATE A PROFESSIONAL ABOUT.ME PAGE
One of the things that is difficult in online learning classes is to keep in mind where everyone is from and what their professional activities might be. In the past students made their biography statement almost completely a personal one -- which is fine. But I would like to know more about you professionally as well. Even if you are not professionally involved or working at the present time, you have worked previously. I want you to create an About.me page.
Select 1 picture for your background
Give the title: Professional Biography
Create a minimum of three sections of your professional biography. My suggestions are: places you have worked; courses/classes you have taught; and whatever else you would like to put in. You can have more sections if you want. Here is my About.me and as you can see I have included the areas of Awards and Recognition; Professional Offices; Professional Presentations. http://about.me/fpentlin.
Finally, fill in the information for Location, Work, Education, and interests and mark "Display my tags."
Post a link to your About.me page on Blackboard by 22 August, Friday. RESPOND TO THE DOODLEhttp://doodle.com/2mps6zqewhyzkbe5 In order to permit everyone to participate in the Skype sessions, the class will be divided into two sections -- a 7:00 pm session and an 8:30 pm session. Let me know which session you prefer. We will keep the same session throughout the semester. If you have a last minute crisis, I will try to work you into the other session.
SKYPE SESSION 25 AUGUST 7:00 AND 8:30 PM.
The topic of this course is “organizing information.” In the past this meant specifically organizing information through the card catalog in order for patrons to find the book and audiovisual material they needed. Today information is a much bigger concept and the librarian needs to organize information from many different sources and present that information in many different ways.
There has been a great deal of discussion about librarians curating information for students and staff. This is an intriguing and exciting component of organizing information for our patrons. Before you begin several projects dealing with organization of information, we will take an hour to discuss the various aspects of what has been an outgrowth of the pathfinder concept that librarians have done for a number of years.
Be sure to have logged on to Skype at least ten minutes before class. I will have the chat window open then. I will call everyone at 7:00 or 8:30 – depending on which group you are in. Be sure to review the “Skype Protocol."
If you are unable to participate in the live Skype discussion on the day it is scheduled you can summarize and reflect significantly on each of the articles in the DISCUSSION BOARD link in Blackboard. There is no penalty for writing the summaries of the articles rather than participating in Skype -- other than the fact that you will miss my and everyone else's shining face!
In preparation for our first Skype session, read the following articles and view the YouTube. Also, in preparation for our Skype session, I need to know what your Skype name is. The easiest way for this to happen is for you to send me a request to add me as a contact in your Skype. (I'm fcpen2008). Given that there are so many people with the same first and last name on Skype, I need to know what your Skype name is. If I've had you in class before then I will already have you as a contact.
